J.D. Power and Associates 2003 U.S. Wireless Phone Evaluation Study

Posted: 11-01-2003, 06:19 PM
Using 100 as the industry average for overall customer satisfaction,
LG scored 121, Samsung got 117, Sanyo 116 and Motorola 102. The
handset manufacturers scoring below average were Nokia with 96,
AudioVox at 94 and Sony Ericsson at 88.

Key quotes:

"Newer mobile phones include many of the features and cutting-edge
technology subscribers are looking for, including multi-color
displays, polyphonic ringers and multimedia messaging capabilities
such as camera phones that can include a voice message."

"One example of a handset manufacturer that exceeds customer
expectations is LG. LG ranks highest in overall customer satisfaction
with wireless cell phones, consistently performing above the industry
average across all five areas that impact carrier performance,
especially with features and physical design."

"Following LG in the rankings are Samsung, Sanyo, Motorola and
Kyocera, respectively."

"The 2003 U.S. Wireless Phone Evaluation Study measures customer
satisfaction among the eight largest wireless handset manufacturers
and is based on responses from 24,359 households."

I'll bet 100 wasn't the AVERAGE. I'm betting the average was around 60 or
so.

100 is the average. JD Powers studies always use 100 as the average to make
comparisions easy.

I should correct myself. The frequently, but not always, use 100.

This definitely seems accurate. I have had 4 Nokia and 2 Sony Ericsson
phones. Both are pieces of ^%$!. I've had endless problems and both.
However, Nokia's customer service is a better than SE.

Hrmmmmmmmm......... Clear reception and able to hold a signal
don't appear to have been worthy of a desired feature.

All of those features are "sexy" things the marketers can really
push to the teenagers and twenty-somethings. "But can you actually
make a phone call with the thing in the places I will be?" is
DULL DULL DULL.

(major sarcasm to be inferred)

Holy moly, was this study done at the food court in the local mall during
summer vacation?

I would swear that the top 4 phone manufacturers would have been flipped.
with Sanyo near the top and LG near the bottom.

Personal preference I guess. I had a LG TM510 for 2 years. solid phone.
great reception and voice quality (lousy menu). Wife has a VX4400. Also
seems to be a solid phone with above average reception and great voice
quality (much improved menu).
