T250 Gone Ape!

Posted: 10-24-2003, 08:26 PM
My 2-year-old Timeport T250 has suddenly started acting very strangely
today.

Every 60 seconds or so (no word of a lie) the connection to my network drops
and the phone re-registers.

I have a full signal, am not roaming (or even moving from my desk!), and the
battery is fully-charged.

I have not made or received any calls today but I assume that such calls
would drop when the network dropped.

My phone is unlocked and I joined a new network this week - but that was on
Monday. It is now Friday so I can't imagine such a problem, were it to be
related to the new network or SIM card, would have taken 4 days to manifest
itself.

My fear is that a component has failed or a connection come loose. If that
is so the phone will almost certainly not be worth repairing and I'll have
to buy a new one.

Any clues

TIA

Paul

Yes they do this when the battery gets a bit low. Try a full discharge
followed by a charge with the phone disconnected.

Given the phone is two years old your battery may have had its 1,000 cycles,
so if is still misbehaves, try a new battery.

If the phone has got wet or the new SIM is a little loose in its holder that
may give problems too.

You can pick up a second hand Ti250 for ~£40 - AFAIK no other phone has a
TAM in it.

Unfortunately I have two batteries and this happens with both of them. If
this were merely a battery issue I would expect them to start this behaviour
at different times (they are not used in strict rotation and were bought 3
months apart).

I can't see any moisture and the SIM is tight - although I am prepared to
accept that the contacts may be loose.

Is it possible I have damaged the SIM? I tried it in another (older) phone
earlier today - a Nokia 5510. It still works with the 5510 now. Surely this
isn't a factor is it?

Worth knowing. I was hoping to pick a new handset in either Japan or Hong
Kong (I'm off there very soon) - not before!

What is a TAM by they way?

For starters, didnt the new "Network" have any kind of a free phone or
promo? The T250 is a good phone, but two years for any cellphone is pushing
it. And for you to need to get a new phone later, in the middle of a
contract is gonna really be the pits. ( unless we are talking PrePaid here?)
Even if you figure it out, at least get the new phone that they should have
available in put it in a drawer while you are still, hopefully, brand new.
Also, it would not be the first time that a new acct has , lets say, fallen
out of the switch , and need to be reconfigured. It also could be an issue
of how the phone is set to Search for the network. Sometimes, even with GSM,
just popping in a new SIM is not enough, a setting or two may need to be
changed.
