Aek, I tried your suggestion (thanks) but it would not let me edit the
number part - only the name! Very frustrating.

Try MAIN MENU-SETTINGS-PHONE STATUS-MY TEL NUMBERS Thats a sequence off the
P280 which has similar interface. It may not be exactly the same. But I think
that the My Tel Numbers is where your problem lies

Thanks; I can get to it but the only part it will let me edit is the Name,
and not the Number. I can only view the number that was pre-programmed when
it was first activated by the previous owner I guess.

Motorola's service tool. It lets you get into the phone's RAM and
backup, restore and change things, and flash the ROM.

I thought that the Motorola flash tool required a special hardware
security dongle. Is what is discussed in this newsgroup a hacked version
which bypasses the dongle check?

Will try that and report back!
Another very irritating problem is that AT&T must immediately release
end-users' phone numbers right back in the availability pool instead of
waiting 90 to 120 days. I got new service on 9/16/03 and we still get calls
all the time for the guy who had the number before it was assigned to us.
