P7389 Dilemma

Posted: 09-10-2003, 05:35 AM
I've been out of the country for a few weeks and while I was away,
apparently some sort of update was sent to make phones that used
to say "VoiceStream" display "T-Mobile" instead. Being away, my
phone (P7389 Timeport) missed the update. Now in my local area my phone says
"Roaming" (a feature of this model I never liked - in the States it
doesn't display the actual name of the company you're roaming on).
I figure it's doing this since it no longer recognizes the identity
of the carrier it's using as being its own company so therefore it
figures it must be roaming. When I called T-Mobile about this, they
said the only way to fix this was to get a new phone. I simply
cannot believe that every time a phone company changes its name,
there's no way to update the information. When AT&T started
offering GSM service, it showed up in my list of networks as
310-380 and not AT&T, apparently because my phone didn't have that
name listed in its memory. Do I have to buy a new phone every time
something like this happens as well too?

BS If they do not re-send the control message a new SIM card should
do the trick, when your phone was originally bought from them. Also a
firmware upgrade yould help, but I guess they simply sent a data
shortmessage to all subscribers to update the network name field on
the SIM or in the phone.

Depends on how old your phone is. A firmawre upgrade may be the
soultion, or you find a technicien who finds the time to enter the
name with his servcie software manually. This is possible, definetely,
I did it with V3688 and StarTAC myself.
