Surfing Web from DOS connected serially to Motorola v120c

Posted: 07-05-2003, 08:54 PM
Hello.

I've got this old Toshiba 486 laptop with only DOS 6.22 loaded on it.
I've also installed a dos graphical web browser called ARACHNE that
seems to load up okay. This browser software claims it can detect a
serial modem and establish a PPP connection to an internet provider
with your PPP account on it.

My cell phone is a Motorola v120c under verizon. I understand motorola
part 98320 (data connectivity kit) will allow me to use my phone as a
data modem to do email and internet if if Im running windows 98se or
2000. I've never tried it - but I'm more intrested in connecting via
DOS to my earthlink ppp account.

A few questions for those of you might have tried anything like this
or know anything about trying to surf from DOS or using the v120c
phone as data modem....

Is there any way to talk to the motorola v120c phone from DOS, or with
dos AT commands? or MUST I have the data kit client software running
under the supported windows platforms?

Anybody surfing from DOS with data kit 98320 under Verizon? how about
Verizon Freeup? How do I find out if phone/contract supports data
connections like this?

Many Thanks.

Everyone is signed up for the free qnc 14.4K service. Just pay for
minutes. If that phone supports 128K, you just have to call them so
they can turn on Express Network. New plans have it on already. Just
pay for airtime used. I don't know where you'll get DOS drivers but
that's your first step.

This is the basic setup for the T720:

The service is not over 100% of the country yet. Check Verizons
coverage map, although it could be somewhat out of date.
Dial #777, "yourphone#"@vzw3g.com, password- vzw.
The setup is really about the same as the QNC. Same number to dial
(#777) through Windows dial up networking (DUN). The only change for
the T720 is the init string and username and password. Might work with
other MOT phones, you just have to try it.

For old 19.2K QNC:
AT$QCMDR=2;AT$QCQNC=1

For new 128K Express Network:
AT$QCMDR=3;AT$QCQNC=0

Username: [your 10-digit number]@vzw3g.com
password: vzw [lower case]

Those init strings tell the phone high speed or low speed. You can
also change that in the menu and skip them.
