How do I tell if my phone is locked or unlocked?

Posted: 05-22-2006, 03:43 PM
Hi all,

I have a Siemens S-55 tri-band phone that takes sim cards. It was used
briefly by me in Canada where I live. Planning a trip to Germany next
year, and will need a phone there. I heard I can just get a sim card
overseas, pay for the credid, and be on my merry way.
Then I heard of locked or unlocked phones. How can I tell here and now
if my phone is locked or not? I have no other sim card to try it with.
Took a look through the newsgroups, and found if I push *#06#, I get
the IMEI number. But that number does not mean anything to me.
Any ideas or helpful hints are very much welcomed.

Cheers, Frank

No way of telling untill you put a diffrent network sim in the phone.
Buy a german card from http://experimentalist.co.uk/shop/index.php?cPath=39
If dont work then its locked you may have to pay to get unlock then might
not even be locked.

Thanks for the reply. That might be the way for me to go.
Get a card and try it. I will take care of that in the next few days.

Yep, you can just get a prepaid sim and pop it in your unlocked phone.

You have to put another provider's sim in it to verify that though
Check with a friend, co-worker, etc.

That is a great idea. I'll as around if somebody else is using a
sim'ed phone with a different provider and give it a try.

Thanks, Frank
