HSDPA upload speed(s)

Not much impressed, with 384 Kbps, I must say - that's what 3G cards
are doing right now, right here (PT).

Since the download speed is going up so much, I expected a lot more
for upload. The way I see it, it's still a long shoot for reliable and
pleasant VoIP. (But then, you can always use JaJah :-) )

Perhaps you should write out the abbreviation HSDPA and things will
become more obvious...

For increased upload speed you have to wait until the implementation of
HSUPA. HSDPA doesn't affect the upload speed, so you have just ordinary
UMTS speed.

And when would that be??

I'm already reading about 3.6 Mbps dowloads for a near future, which
still doesn't enthusiast me at all, if that still means I can't have
decent latencies, and good upload speeds, that allow me to use VoIP
acceptably.

I'm currently on CDMA2000, with 1.4 Mbps down, 153 Kbps up, the
latency is lowsy, and VoIP is just wishfull thinking - therefore,
having used VoIP properly, and having friends and family living
"abroad", I consider Jajah a blessing.

By the way, is WiMax for real, or just politics before election day?

HSDPA has good latency and more than enough uplink speed for acceptable VoIP.

Can you quantify good latency? My CDMA2000 connection doesn't get any
better than 300 ms latency, on a good, sun shiny day. Upload is only
153 Kbps. A bad joke for VoIP

HSDPA latency is on the order of 70+ ms, or less than dial-up.

Hold on, 70 ms, for a wireless connection, is very good!! But the +
mark in front of it makes me wonder - how far up, how often, does it
go, from the excelent 70 ms??

Just to quantify things, figures just measured on a HSDPA link:

PING www.l.google.com (66.249.93.104) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 66.249.93.104: icmp_seq=1 ttl=237 time=169 ms
[...snip...]
64 bytes from 66.249.93.104: icmp_seq=50 ttl=237 time=146 ms

50 packets transmitted, 50 received, 0% packet loss, time 49202ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 138.633/149.639/202.372/10.466 ms


So the average latency is about 150 ms. I didn't measure the upload
speed now. But you're right, there is a strong dependency from the
signal strength and with a weak signal the datarate drops quickly.

I guess this should be enough for VoIP, isn't it? I'm using Skype with
Video over such a link (okay, no SIP...) and it is sufficient.
