Yes it wipes everything out and your phone is almost like when you
purchased it. They however recommend and remind you several times before
you start the process to sync *and* backup your data.
Then it offers to restore them for you about half an hour later (it took
me about half hour for the whole process -
sync/backup/update/restore/sync)
