ATT takeover by Cingular, What do ATT customers

Posted: 02-18-2004, 07:46 PM
This morning's paper tellsme that ATT is being taken over by Cingular, and
had this cryptic statement
that eventually, ATT customers would have to bring their phones in to a
Cingular to be "adjusted"

Anyone know what this adjustment is? We have ATT GSM phones, I am
guessing maybe they will unlock them for us, so Cingular SIMS can be
inserted, which would be nice. Can't imagine what ATT customers on TDMA
phones will have to do

That is precisely what the adjustment is - nothing more need be done.

Once the TDMA database from ATTWS is merged with Cingular's current
database, viola!

Probably a software update to lock them on Cingular instead of AT&T!

Would seem easier (and cheaper) to me to simply update the AT&T SIMS
over-the-air with a new roaming database telling them to roam on
Cingular if AT&T isn't available, then eventually when AT&T is no
longer "available" they'll all be on Cingular.
I suspect data settings will have to be changed, so AT&T customers can
now pay too much for "Wireless Internet Express" instead of pay too
much for mLife...

That one's easy- each phone will need to be reprogrammed for the
Cingular home system ID instead of AT&T's, as well as a new roam
database. TDMA phones aren't locked like GSM, so it could all be done
from home with a call to customer service.

I hope this doesn't mean that our phones will be relocked to Cingular. It
took me foreever to get my phone unlocked.

If your phone is unlocked, I don't think you have to worry, you just need to
get a Cingular SIM and pop it in.

And where did you discover this piece of information?

You wouldn't need to take it in then would you if the previous poster was
correct.

There's not much discover here - if your phone is unlocked, you get a
new Cingulr SIM - if your phone is locked, you take it in to be
re-locked and get a new Cingular SIM.

Yeah, Joe, you're probably right, I'm assuming a lot. Truth is, it's
more likely a great conspiracy to trick everyone with the Mystery of the
Century (yes, this century). Cingular and ATTWS will huddle together in
shared boardrooms of teak tables and hemp hammocks, concoct a new threat
to national security. Afterwards, the TSA will require us turn our
handsets under cover of darkness for submission to the Big Bad Witch,
whereby a dirty, seductive dance with scented candles and violins will
ensue in order to impart a liberal dose of New Age Cingular voodoo. So,
it's either incredulously simple or notoriously complicated, and the
choice we make will largely depend on how much fun we want out of it.
Personally, I'm going with the violins.
