Verizon Wireless said it added 1.5 million new subscribers last quarter,
leading the U.S. wireless market in subscriber growth. The carrier posted a
profit of $307 million, up from $261 million a year ago. Despite the
increase in profit, Verizon Wireless reported a drop in ARPU to $48.85, down
from $49.23 in the same quarter last year. Overall revenue grew to $5.98
billion, up from $5.22 billion a year ago. Verizon chairman and CEO Ivan
Seidenberg today said the carrier would welcome consolidation in the U.S.
wireless industry. He added that if Vodafone wants to sell its stake in
Verizon Wireless and pursue AT&T Wireless: "we certainly would not shy away
from wanting to own 100 percent of Verizon Wireless." Seidenberg's comment
has spurred more rumors that Vodafone will soon make a play for AT&T
Wireless.
