Cellphone in Western Europe

Posted: 01-28-2004, 04:58 PM
I am going to Western Europe for about a month and would like to have
a cellphone. I have seen deals in the US for phones, but the seem very
expensive. Can I just buy a prepaid service when I get there? Can I
take a US GSM phone and just buy a prepaid SIM?

Thanks for any help

GSM in the USA is at 1900 Mhz, and increasing at 850Mhz as well.
The europeans (and most of the rest of the world is at 900/1800 Mhz),
so at the very least you need a dual 900/1900Mhz if you expect it to
work in the USA and/or in Europe, and perferally a 900/1800/1900
(which is now fairly common).

The bind is that just about all phones sold in the USA are SIM locked,
which means they will not accept a prepaid sim. In general any phone
sold by an authorized agent will be locked. I think only OMnipoint
had unlocked phones, and then only in their own shops. There are
unhlocked phones available on eBay. The Ericsson R520m isn't the
latest and greatest, but it has a lots of very happy users. Nothing
very whiz bang flash, but there isn't much it cannot or will not do.
(no Camera, No colour Screen,no Polymorphic ring tones, but otherwise
supports just about everything. It is tri bankd 900/1800/1900Mhz, at
the going rate on eBay it is a good value.

Generally prepaids in Europe are less expensive at 1800Mhz then at 900
Mhz.

And you will save a bundle using prepaids in Europe. ROAM stands
RAPE,OVERCHARGE And MASSACRE

I have to second this. I use an R520 and I just found a couple features I'd
like to have that I can't find on the phone:
1. It only sends e-mail via SMTP and
2. You can't play audio attachments on e-mails (AFAIK).

Otherwise, it has IrDA, Bluetooth, tri-band, Class 8 GPRS, WAP. Lots of
features for a low-cost phone.

Which other possibility should be implemented?
SMTP is THE way to send E-Mail.
But you also can send E-Mail via SMS using a
"SMS-to-E-Mail" Gateway.

Whow. Never thought about THIS possibility.
I think only VERY few people will miss this.

I REALLY like it. Used it more than a year myself.

IMAP or SMTP with Authentication (ASMTP). The R520 can't authenticate a SMTP
connection and sends *before* receiving. This makes it hard if your carrier
does not provide a SMTP server, since most ISPs prevent off-net access to
their servers unless you can authenticate.

True, but I have a way to use something like this. Same as reading FAXes
attached to e-mails. Or having the phone receive and display FAXes, sans PC.
One of those functions you'd see on a top-end PDA/Phone.

Well, they are out of favor and cheap right now. Yesterday's news. But I'll
be happy with mine until I can find a GSM/WCDMA phone that does what I need,
cheap.
