I'm going through the same process, also for a trip to New Zealand and
Australia in October.

I've figured the best thing is to get a used phone on ebay - at any given
time there seem to be hundreds of them. I'm leaning towards an Ericson T39
or Nokia V66. When I get I back I can resell the phone, and even with a
minor loss its a lot less than renting a phone.

I would be interested hearing back what you got and how it worked.

I have decided to give T-Mobile a try because I was on the market for
a new US wireless account anyway, and I was able to get a Nokia 3650
world phone for free (after rebates) by signing up through Amazon. I
don't think I'll be making or receiving enough calls on my trip Down
Under to justify buying different SIM cards; I'll just pay the crazy
per-minute charges to use my T-Mobile account while I'm there.

I've heard that T-Mobile is happy to give its customers the unlock
codes for their phones, so when I go to Europe in November I'll
probably go that route and pick up a local SIM card in London. If not,
T-Mobile's international roaming rates, while expensive, are a lot
cheaper than what I was paying when I rented a phone through Verizon
for my last trip to Europe, PLUS I had to put down a $300 deposit, pay
$25 for shipping and a per-day rental charge. T-Mobile doesn't charge
any excess fees for international roaming; you only pay for whatever
minutes you use. Works for me...I hope!
