And likely won't ever be, since 1800 is in use by the US military and 900 is
in use for unlicensed cordless phones and baby monitors, among other things.

There are no regular GSM 900 or 1800 networks in the U.S. There once
was a GSM 900 network with a range of less than 1 km for an international
conference.
The normal GSM networks in the U.S. are 1900mHz, and AT&T wireless is
building an 850mHz GSM network over their 800mHz D-AMPS (aka TDMA)
network (same frequencies, different name).

Neither. If you want GSM in the USA you must use a GSM-850 and/or 1900
phone. Do not believe any rumors you hear to the contrary.

No, they are building an 800MHz GSM network over their 800MHz TDMA/AMPS
