Please help with GSM problem

Posted: 07-14-2003, 06:29 AM
3 months ago I purchased Motorala V66 and signed up onm a T-Mobile
service contract. I signed up for international roaming. I am now in
Thailand and I cannot place a successful call to the US.

Here in Thailand, when I turn the phone on it searches for the
network, and after a minute or so it connects with the network but the
signal strength shows zero bars. When I dial a US phone number I get a
call failed message.

For example, I dial exactly this: 002 1 949-368-xxxx to reach a US
phone number that has a 949 area code.

What am I doing wrong, is there another number which must be dialed to
get make a call go through from Thailand?

Thanks

Are you certain the Thai system is even aware of the existance to the
949 area code? Try calling some other number with a more mature area
code.

Try using + instead of 002

Try doing a manual search for a different carrier. Use +1 instead of 0021

GSM coverage in Thailand is EXCELLENT especially in Bangkok.
T-mobile has roaming agreement with AIS GSM (900MHz) and
DTAC (1800MHz) Chose AIS if you can, they have the best coverage !

Secondly, international dialing code for Thailand is 001 not 002 !

And of course, you have to have int'l roaming activated.

It is also much much cheaper to buy a local SIM. Again, I would recomend
AIS's "1-2 call" Calls are a bit more than others (5 THB/Min, free incoming)
but you'll get better reception almost everywhere you go. Orange is also
a good ulternative, much cheaper but coverage is not as good but if you
don't
travel to the jungle and stay mainly in BKK, then you're ok. GSM service
over there is far superior than what we have here in the US. Oh, did I
mention
free incoming calls ? (Not when you're roaming with T-Mobile or others
though )

The poor guy has a US phone. Most of these are SIM locked
even with a contract.

So he not only has to buy the local SIM card, which I
would also recommend, but also a local phone.
(Which he can get for 50$ how we could read.)
