Cellular phones for visitors to la belle Canada

May I ask Canadians, and travellers to Canada, which prepaid celfon system
is best in Toronto and lower Ontario?

Thank you kindly, Eliane.

That depends what you mean by best. If you mean coverage and coverage
quality, and you will be in urban areas most of the time, then get Fido. Not
only is their urban coverage really terrific, their pre-paid prices are
lower than the competition. Fido is a GSM provider.

If you need quite a bit of rural coverage, then Fido isn't the way to go.
The other providers have varying degrees of rural coverage, but which is
best at specific places is tough to figure out in advance.

If you prefer GSM or TDMA, then go with Rogers AT&T. If you prefer CDMA, I
would recommend going with Telus Mobility, since even in areas where they
don't have coverage you get to use Bell Mobility's CDMA network at no extra
charge. Where they do have coverage, Telus has a better network than Bell
Mobility, with fewer frame errors overall, and therefore better sound
quality than Bell.

And, all of these have prepaid systems, as I requested?

I do believe so. But you should be able to look them up on the net just to
be sure. Go to www.cellular-news.com click on "coverage maps" and the find
Canada. They have links to most carriers.

A few years ago I took a Nokia 2160 on my vacation to Canada and activated a
Rogers prepaid account on NAM 2. Calls were something like CN$0.35/min
rather than US$1.00 via our carrier's Canadian roaming. Rogers has the best
single system coverage in Canada. The B-side CDMA carriers have Rogers beat
on total coverage but you have one group of several companies (Aliant?) in
the Atlantic area, Bell in the middle and a third in the Pacific (I think).
But if you are planning on dropping in on Happy Valley, Labrador, last time
I checked, the only wireless service was NewTel's (Aliant) B-side.

It depends on what you need. If you don't plan getting far out of Toronto a
Fido GSM prepaid SIM might be the best deal. Take a ook at their coverage
map.

The big drawback of Fido pre-paid SIM cards is that you can not make
international calls.

Use a callback service or buy prepaid LD calling cards.

It was Cellular South. I now have a 5165 on that account.

Agreed. It should be noted that you can call the US from FIDO which is
important for triggering call backs, etc.
