ATTWS - data services-best phone?

Posted: 07-10-2003, 06:21 PM
Got the dreaded notice today that ATTWS is shutting down my pocketnet
service and forcing me onto GSM (or another carrier). It was kinda sweet as
voice would work anywhere, including analog, and it had data service in
alot - but not all - places. Well, adios. As near as I can tell from the
ATTWS web sites, if I go to GSM, I am locked in and there will be plenty of
places here in Florida that I presently have at least voice, but won't after
I switch to GSM. Data looks real limited to. I am looking for a North
American phone and service that:

1)voice communication works where there is GSM, TDMA and/or analog only
2) gets internet WAP service to check my email, news headlines on the phone
3) allows me to hook my laptop up and get GPRS where available at a
reasonable, lump sum rate per month
4) allows me to use the phone to call in a dialup service where GPRS is not
available

Thanks for all comments!

The only things I know of that meet all your criteria:

* Siemens S46 on ATTWS

* GAIT phone on Cingular.

Thanks for the quick reply and good information. Doing some research into
this further:

1) Would you actually be able to dial out to your dial in modem ISP with
ATT? I can currently do that with an old nokia TDMA phone when it goes
into analog mode. If you have a GSM phone and maybe the combo GSM/TDMA of
the Siemens, will ATT actually "let" you do dial in? I came across
something that suggested they can't emulate the modem or whatever the term
is when in GSM, not sure about TDMA either

2) What's your recommendation on a Cingular GAIT phone?

Thanks!

No -- good catch -- the Siemens doesn't have AMPS, and ATTWS doesn't support
digital CSD. [blush]

There are two, but since you want GPRS, the only real choice is the Sony
Ericsson T62u.

Thank you again John, I took a much closer look at Cingular and the T62u,
which I understand has GPRS, GSM, TDMA, and analog, which is most
impressive. So I called up Cingular, and they basically gave me alot of
conflicting information I can't sort out, maybe you can. If I put
everything she said together, it would be something like the phone has GPRS,
but you cannot access the internet with it. Not withstanding that you can't
acess the internet with it, you can buy as an added service either
wireless internet express or you can buy wireless internet for the unit. (I
presume then you just send a check each month for nothing). Wireless
internet express or wireless internet works with the T62u but not both. In
fact, neither do. Despite the fact that neither work, wireless internet
express is much, much better because you get so much more of the internet.
Wireless internet (sans express) gets you less, in fact, not much at all.
In fact, it apparrently gets you nothing, but it is alot cheaper.

I wish I taped this, it would make for good comedy routine somewhere. I am
amazed phone companies are able to sell anything at all.

Anyway, what I want to be able to do is check my email on the phone and
news, etc. When I need to work on line with my laptop, if I have high
speed GPRS available, I want to hook my laptop up and go. If not, I will
use a CSD connection to my ISP.

Can you sort out what Cingular really offers?
