Theme Making for Beginners, Learn to make themes yourself

You should first get the latest theme studio from here
Carbide.ui S60 Theme Edition 3.1 for Symbian OS

After downloading the theme studio, follow the instrution below.

Important thing to remember while Installing theme studio.
__________________________________________________ _______

While Instaling theme studio, you will be asked about Java option. There will be two options: 1) share or use the java program already available in the computer 2) Install New java for this program (erm..i haven't typed it in the exact words as the software..but still you'll know once you see it)

Choose the second option (second i listed here.i dont know in what order it will appear in installation..so choose the appropriate option) Install New java again!

If everything is smooth...then okay! Installation part completed! Now we can move in to the themeing part.

Themeing Part

You actually no need to open theme studio to do the idle screen (Front screen) and background screen. Let me explain you how to do it in a simple way. All the second generation S60 phone got the same screen size 176x208 pixels. So have a look at the preview images i've shown..they all of the same dimension.

You can use any of these images as reference images everytime you create theme. Let me start this tutorial with an assumption that you already know to use some basic features of photoshop (im doing this tut with photoshop).

Step1: Open the preview image in photoshop and drag the line (from the ruler) and place it as showin the image. You can clearly see the lines seperate the status area, wallpaper area and Control area. Now the area between the lines will be the place to work with wallpaper.

Okay, in this tutorial, im gonna us this image of 'Aishwarya Rai' (former Miss world) and create a theme based on that.

Step 2: Whenever, i create a theme i dont just make the wallpaper in onetouch or just one try... I place different images and in different positions...and think for a while which on look better?! Then, i choose the best out of it For example, this picture can be placed in so many as below:

Out of this three image, just say.. i like the third image better. So im going to use that image as for this theme. As this is a theme making tutorial (Not a Photoshop tutorial) im just going to tell the steps of making the themes. And NOT how to make them in photshop or how to create layers.

Step 3: Now using that image, i create the status bar and control area.
To keep the tut simple and save the time, i'm just using a simple design for this theme. Okay status are and control area created.

Step 4: Now u to create a background image for this theme. Save the image just created as 'idlescreen.bmp' and incase if you want, save to photoshop file also. Now clos everything and open the idlescreen.bmp in the photoshop. Here is a screen shot of how i created the image.

Now, i u be using this final image as the bg image. So save that file as 'background.bmp'. And Now te idle screen and Background image are created.

Step 5: Open the Theme studio(TS). Once the TS is open, click Theme > New from the top left side corner of the menu and follow the procedures. Now the New theme creation window will open. From the left side menu, select the 'Idle screen' and click on 'Edit' on bottom of the screen. this will open the blank image in photoshop. Now paste the 'idlescreen.bmp' image we created on this blank image and save it as Bitmap(bmp) file (File name will be given by it automatically and please donot alter that!).

Once you're done saving the file in photoshop, close that file in photoshop (Donot close photoshop! i mean only the file!) and return back to the Themestudio.. i will look like this.

Press the save button at the bottom. This will save this image as 'idle screen' image in themestudio. In the same way, create the Background image also. After creating the background image, if you press the CHECK OUT button on the left side menu (its at the bottom), it will show the preview like this:

Step 6: Now you can see the idlescreen image and background image are added to the screen. But if you look at the menu screen image, the status area is not really same as the Idle screen and the theme need a lot of customization like calendar image, pinboard image, pop-up window, control are for popup etc. If you move the cursor over the each item it will get highlighted nd change to green color. When it change like that, click on that item and click 'To Fix List' from the right side. As shown below:

This will add that component to a small window on the left side. So, when you click on that it will directly open the edit window. This method will reduce the difficult of searching and clicking for each item from the main left menu and then editing it. So Now go through all the preview windows and click on all the components and add them to the fix list.

Now by editing all these items, your theme will be a complete one! After editing all the components, if you think you're done with everything , you can see the preview if satisfied click 'Continue' and create the 'sis' file.
For any info\help just pm me,so that i can help u.
