Bluetooth icon and software disappears in Windows XP SP2 - Help!

Posted: 03-27-2006, 04:23 PM
Hi

I have installed my bluetooth software for Windows XP with service pack 2.
Everything seems to work perfectly - until something new installs itself
onto my system. I may be updating something - or installing a new hardware
device. All of a sudden, the usual blue bluetooth icon with red bluetooth
marker inside it, simply disappears! I have to uninstall my entire Widcomm
suite, and reinstall it all again - taking half an hour or longer each time,
in order to get my icon to reappear in the system tray. I never experienced
this when I was using just Win XP with Service Pack 1. But for some reason,
SP2 decides to work differently. Does anyone know of this problem, and if
there is any easy way out to not losing that icon and having to reinstall my
software all over again.

Note: I still have the usual bluetooth icon in the system tray i.e. the one
with the white colour bluetooth symbol inside it. I know that one can
easily cause *this* icon to appear and disappear from the system tray, by
simply choosing that option in the control panel. It is to the other icon
that I am referring. In other words, one should always see two bluetooth
icons in SP2 - one which says that the software is installed (which always
appears) and the other MORE IMPORTANT icon which shows when one is connected
to another device.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks.

It might not be this, but try the 'unplug n pray' program that disables XP's
'universal plug n play' that has been known to cause problems like this
(such as the 'safely remove hardware' icon disappearing from the system
tray'..

It's worth a try and won't hurt anything if it doesn't fix your situation..
