TDK PCMCIA card and Win XP SP2 - any problems?

Posted: 02-07-2005, 02:29 PM
After struggling by with a crappy 3Com Bluetooth PCMCIA card for the last
three years I have finally found the exalted TDK card going cheap and fancy
getting one. Am I likely to face any problems installing this card onto XP
SP2? My copy of XP has SP2 integrated so I do not have the option to
selectively uninstall Bluetooth related Hotfix(es).

Is there anything I should be aware of regarding the installation procedure
to work within any SP2 constraints? The TDK Systems website really does not
seem to tackle the issue and neither does the install guide for the card. I
know any one of several USB dongles would be the easy answer but I do not
want a USB dongle sticking out of my laptop as it will get snapped off - my
USB ports are on the rear and out of sight behind the screen.

Thanks,
Tim.

the pc card, unlike the usb stick from tdk does not work with the drivers
included in xp (sp2), so you first have to install the tdk driver from their
website before plugging the card.
beside that, this cards works perfect on my machine and supports almost all
profiles (audiogateway, headset,...)

cheers thomas

Thanks for that. That is what I was hoping to hear. The TDK card certainly
has a load more features than the 3Com one and I didn't want to run into any
nasty conflicts between TDK software/drivers and XP SP2.

Regards,
Tim.

FYI, the card arrived today with Widcomm 1.4.2.18 software and installed
perfectly with no need for any jiggery pokery - just insert CD, install
software, insert card. It is far more feature rich and intuitive than the
crappy 3Com card it replaced. I'm well chuffed :-)

Thanks...

Carphone Warehouse in the UK. £50 on "special" at the moment and over £100
in some places. I also had a £20 voucher because they messed me around a
year ago when buying some PDAs so it effectively cost me just £30.

Note I bought online and the card came in clear plastic packaging with a
manufacture date of Jan 2005. I initially went into a CPW store where, after
a long search and a lot of shrugging, they found a dusty old box with a May
2003 date. The old card was finished in green rather than the new blue and I
bet the software was seriously out of date. Mind you, there is a download
available from the tdksystems website but that looks like 1.4.2.0 rather
than 1.4.2.18 that came with my card. I don't know whether there are any
physical hardware differences with the card itself but I'm a lot happier
with a brand new card than one nearly two years old. Delivery was free and
arrived next day.

Since you probably don't have a CPW voucher take a look at
http://www.scancom.co.uk/product.php/59/9 where it is under £30 inc VAT. I'm
not sure about postage though.

Cheers,
Tim.
