I see some dongles listed as 723 kbps and some at 1 mbps.

Regardless of the "official" rate, what you get in practise can range dramatically. eg, my SE T610 would only do 5kB/s to my Apple PowerBook (uses the Belkin USB dongle internally) while my new SE K700i does 25kB/s.
