radiation when using a cellular handset Vs Using a Bluetooth Headset

Posted: 06-29-2004, 04:38 PM
Hi Amigos,
Just a thought I had all of a sudden.
Has anyone ever researched how safe is it to use a Bluetooth headset?
We all know the radiation one is exposed to when using a cellular
handset directly (i.e. the actual cellular phone). That being said,
how much of that radiation is lost when the headset is replaced with a
Bluetooth headset.
I have been using my Platronix headset for over a year now and I get
serious headaches since… Just a thought.

Let me know if you know of any medical research or other.
Cheers,
Sam

Try using the larger ear-clip.

You could do a simple test: turn off the headset and wear it as you
would normally (just use the phone on the other ear, but wear the
headset while you're phoning). Then see if your headaches are better
after a week or so.

Perhaps it's just the mechanical strain put on your ear/head by the
headset. Or maybe the raised temperature, especially if it's a
plug-in-the-ear type of headset. Normally you get some cool air around
your ears, with these plugs your inner ear doesn't get much ventilation
- nice for bacteria growth.

Regards...

If the phone is being used in your pocket with bluetooth instead of at your
head your family jewels get the radiation.

Regards medical research I'd suggest searching at

http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/
http://www.thelancet.com/search

If BMJ doesn't have the first hand paper they'll often reference interesting
research in an editorial.

Cool answers everybody. Thank you, however the question remains; is RF
technology safer then cellular?
Who says a Bluetooth earpiece next to one's head is safer then a
cellular phone?

This is the question.

Thats a pity. I'd have thought they'd be the first to have research
regarding mobile radiation.

GSM technology has a 200 mw transmitter @ 850/1900 mz, TDMA/CDMA technology
is 600 mw 800/1900, AMPS was/is 3 watts @ 800 mz.

Bluetooth class 2 is 20 mw, so would be much less likely to do anything
damaging.

Yes, but consider the frequency of BT, which is 2.4 Megahertz. That is
exactly the frequency all those microwave ovens use. (At least here in
Europe). So, I'm not sure if the lower power really implies lower healt
effects.

Actually it's around 2.45 *GigaHertz* .

2.45GHz is used because thats the band which is internationally allocated
the world over for this type of use. And NOT because it's an optimal
frequency for cooking, etc.

The band is called the ISM-band (Industrial, Scientific and Medical).

I'm pretty sure that the health/heating effects of Bluetooth will be
somewhat less, as to be vitually ummeasurable. Microwave-ovens typically
operate in the 600 Watt to 1,000 Watt power-range. And yes Bluetooth
operates around 20mW (.02 Watts)

Microwave-ovens = 600-1000 Watts.
Bluetooth = .02 Watts.

Any comments ?
