Developing with bluetooth for less than 1,000$ ?

Is it possible to purchase used bluetooth development kits so I could start
developing with this technology at home. It seems that every development kit
that I see ranges in the thousands - and so is totally inaccessible to me.
Does anyonoe know why developing using bluetooth is so expensive ?

Why do you explicitly need a development kit? Buy a couple of BT USB
adapters for >= 25 €/$ each and start developing with Linux BlueZ (the
Linux Bluetooth stack which is part of every current Linux
distribution). The sources of the BlueZ tool programs will teach you how
to program BT.

Michael

And the bluetooth specification can be downloaded freely from
www.bluetooth.org. For communication on USB level with a BT
dongle, the HCI (Host Controller Interface) is very important.
The specification itself focusses on serial interfaces, I don't
know technical details about USB interfaces.

I think the expensive developement kits focus mainly on
single chip developement with e.g. an ARM7 or ARM9 core,
which is unreachable for home development anyway.

We produce i/o devices and use the serial port to communicate with the
device. Now we want to replace the serial cable by bluetooth
connection. We test the software of widcomm. But there are a lot of
problems. The software is not as easy to use as we want. Now we want
to develop a software which is simple to use to configure and use
bluetooth. The only possibility I know is to use the sdk of widcomm.
We can't use linux, because our customer use windows.

Do you know other possibilities?

Best regards
Julius
