Same dongle - two machines?

Posted: 02-06-2004, 04:57 PM
It seems I cannot (smoothly) use my Epox Bluetooth dongle in my desktop AND
my laptop. I want to use it with my SE T610 phone - at home and on the
road. But when I pair with the desktop, the phone shows the computer name
as Desktop, which is correct. Then, when I put the BT in the notebook and
try to pair, it still 'finds' Desktop, even though the Widcomm software
'knows' the machine's name is Notebook.

Is it normal in BT-land for a dongle to seem to get 'burned' with a name the
first time and then refuses to refresh in a different machine? The phone
needs to pair for each machine switch, so it knows SOMETHING's different.
Yet the device name (DESKTOP) is always the result. Any ideas?

Sort of. Your phone will see the same Bluetooth device address for your
desktop and your laptop and usually one device has only one name. And as
getting the name is relatively time-consuming it's quite common to cache
the name.

Yes. During the pairing procedure a key is generated which not only
depends on the addresses of the participating devices and the PIN but
also incorporates a random value. Thus the key will be different for
each pairing.
