Sync Outlook & Sony T610 w/ blue Tooth

Posted: 11-30-2003, 04:14 AM
I have a USB blue tooth adapter on my Desktop PC and have it paired to
my Sony Ericsson T610. I can sync no problem using the built in
service (irMC sync). The problem is that this does not allow you to do
ANY filtering. I get all my contacts and all tasks, even completed
ones. I want to use the software (XTDNConnect) to filter. This is
part of the Sony Communication software. The issue is that:

1) There are no good directions. I have read stuff about setting up
networking and modems and in other places it doesn't mention it.

2) After hours of fooling around, I still get a "cannot find phone"
message when trying to sync (or change the phone options or anything
from the Sony software).

3) I have read XTDN doesn't support Blue tooth. I hav eread that it
does. Does it or doesn't it?

I am using XP Pro. Any help is appreciated.

I & others sync their T610 with Outlook using XTNDC over BT with various
makes of dongle (most of which use the Widcomm BT s/w). This subject has
been covered many times on both this group & alt.cellular.bluetooth:
http://tinyurl.com/x2lv
A few pointers: XTNDC & all bundled SE s/w uses SE Phone Monitor to
interface with a phone & won't work until that application finds one.
The BT stack installation also provides virtual serial ports, 2, of
which the client port number (of the serial port) is the one you set in
the Phone Monitor s/w options. Opening the serial port in My Bluetooth
Places before trying to sync the 1st time can help. If PM prompts for a
connection type (depending on version) select cable, *not* BT.

The irMC sync profile is pretty damn useless as you discovered due to
its lack of filtering. When you get PM to recognise your phone, take a
close look at the filtering options such as the date fields in Calendar,
otherwise you could swamp your phone. You can use your main Contacts
folder & sync by category for example. I keep mine separate by creating
a new contacts folder then pointing XTNDC to it with no filtering then I
drag & drop between it & my main Contacts folder as required. Good luck.

The thing is, I have read them all. They talk about the com port. If I
look in My BlueTooth Places and at the config, it says the client port
for BlueTooth Serial is COM4. When I open up the Phone Monitor, I have
COM4 Enabled and reserved. On the local tab, BlueTooth Serial is on
COM5. I can't make them both the same (and dont know if they should
be). Once I select a COM port for one, it is not in the selection list
for the other. I see terms being thrown around like "make sure your
com ports are the same", but there are COM ports everywhere and need
specifics. There are local and client COM ports, the ability to enable
and reserve them in the Phone Monitor, etc....

And do you need Dial up Networking? One time I installed the Sony
software I got an icon on my desktop for the wizard, another time I
didn't.

Did you get the wizard shortcut the after the 1st install? It maybe due
to some reg settings where retained after uninstalling. Sometimes s/w
behaves inconsistently for no apparent rhyme or reason.

Assuming the BT stack is Widcomm (you don't state what you are using),
you will have a com port listed under local Services that the BT stack
uses. You should only need to worry about this one if another
application wants to use it at the same time. Under the Client
Applications tab, you will have a com port listed for a single BT serial
port unless you added a 2nd one. This is the com port you should enter
in SE's Phone Monitor.

I've not setup the modem & have disabled the BT Network as I don't need
either. If after rechecking & you still can't connect, re-pair the
phone, despite the BT stack itself seeing the it. Still no luck -
disable all other com ports in PM settings or reinstall both the BT & SE
s/w, perhaps searching the registry for remaining settings & make sure
the install folders are deleted 1st. Point 3 in your original post
regarding XTNDC not supporting BT is incorrect in that it doesn't need
to as the BT s/w uses serial connections as I'm sure IR solutions would
in a similar manner. This allows BT to work with older s/w launched
before BT came out.

Thanks for the responses. I am using Widcomm. When you say I should
select that COM Port in Phon eMonitor, what do you mean? The only
thing I see in phone monitor is 5 tabs, one of which is COM Ports. You
can enable and reserve them in there. Multiple can be
disabled/enabled/reserved, but there is no where to say this is the
one COM port I am using.

I have re-installed and re-paired several times already with no luck.
For clarification, Phone Monitor is in Control Panel, correct? At one
time I had a program called phonesettings.exe (it didn't install on
the second or third install).

If the Com port number is say COM3 in the Client Applications tab for
serial port in your BT s/w, under the COM Ports tab in PM, enable COM3 &
reserve it (there should be a list of numbered ports, COM1/2 are
physical ports & the remaining virtual ones should have been installed
with the Widcomm BT s/w - COM3 to COM13 on my system), optionally
disable the rest.

This assumes that if you click on your serial port 1 for your T610 in My
BT Places, it connects OK (the connection icon has 2 green arrows & your
T610 shows a connection & when you disconnect, the phone disconnects. As
Scott in Aztlan states, right clicking on your T610 serial port
connection icon then Properties, will also show the com port number
selected. If this doesn't help, post back with what's listed in the COM
Ports tab in PM & the Client port number in the BT s/w (probably COM3
but possibly another one). If COM3, the listed port in the Local
Services will probably be COM4 which you should completely ignore unless
there's a conflict with another application which is unlikely.

If that doesn't help - it's time to contact SE's Tech support. Good
luck.

The COM Port in Client Apps and serial port 1 is COM4 so it looks
okay. I might add you cannot even select the com port for the serial
port (COM4 is selected, but it is grayed out).

I guess I am going to have to give up. This is way to much time for
something that shouldn't be this hard. The directions from Sony
Ericsson suck. I am techinically savvy (I am a programmer), and can't
figure this out. In the Sony readme, they talk about modems, etc, but
it is unclear how they play into this whole thing. There are too many
parts from too many vendors.

I have found a way to do some filtering using the built-in services.
For example, for my contacts, I create a view based on category. Then
I selected all the entries and choose send to Bluetooth device. It is
not really syncing, just transferring, but is better than sending over
stuff you don't want.

Greyed out where exactly? Being greyed out anywhere sounds ominous. You
could try changing the com port number in the BT s/w then PM or even
create a second port having checked in Device Manager for problems.

Please also post back with the com port number listed under the Local
Services tab in the BT s/w (I would expect 3 or 5). I agree with you -
syncing should be a lot easier to setup. Took me 2 weeks to get mine
working reliably every time as it does now with Widcomm v1.3.2.7. I
would worry about BT or SE modems after getting the serial connection to
work with XTNDC & disable them for the moment.
