Bluetooth phone woes

Posted: 11-27-2003, 10:38 AM
My SE T68i suddenly seems to be unable to receive or make outgoing
calls (even with full bars) after about a year. The same thing
happened with the T39m I had before that. I have a powerbook, a palm
tungsten and that bluetooth sony camera, so I want my phone to have
bluetooth.

When I look at all the new phones with bluetooth, they are all pricey
high-end models with brilliant screens, built-in camera, PDA, gaming,
etc. This makes no sense to me, since bluetooth is for connecting my
various things...so why would I pay a fortune for some all-in-one
gadget and then have bluetooth as a feature? Why aren't they making
any simple business phones with bluetooth? I just want my phone to
make calls and to connect my other stuff to GPRS. I know there are
some older models like this, but I can't find any of them at local
stores.

Is there anything coming soon that will suit me, or are phonemakers no
longer making such handsets?

Nokia 6310i seems like an ideal phone for you. I think Nokia are still
manufacturing it. Its pretty basic (no colour screen and stuff), but has
bluetooth and the battery lasts for ages.

Nokia don't seem to like making Bluetooth phones. I wanted a Nokia BT phone,
but not the 6310i. Went into various shops and asked for a Nokia Bluetooth
phone and all they offered me was the 6310i.

I ended up buying a P900. This replaced my mp3 player and my PDA. My wife
also has a SE T610 which she loves (also BT).

Well the smart-phones, 7650, 3650, N-Gage, 6600 all have bluetooth
but maybe that isn't what you are looking for.
I don't know if any other models have it or not.

I live in asia and this phone is nowhere to be found anymore. Anyhow,
I find
it a bit too long for my tastes (i always keep my phone in my shirt
pocket).
The cheapest bluetooth phone now on the market seems to be the SE
T610, which is actually quite an expensive phone. I'd go for the P900,
but I need to use palm-specific software regularly. And if I was
getting a pda/phone combo, I wouldn't require bluetooth to begin with!
Someone please explain the logic for only including bluetooth on
converged devices!

I have a 3650. The round keypad/dial is weird to get used to.
I believe (not sure if it is commonly available yet) that there is a
3660 with a more normal keypad out, or at least due.

Have you looked at the Handspring Treo
http://www.handspring.co.uk/products/treo600/index.asp

uses Palm OS instead of Symbion. Doesn't have Bluetooth as default.
Instead has wireless. But I understand that BT is available as a plug in
card.

I thought the 3660 was just the American version of the 3650.

The one thats just come out, which does look more normal, is the 6600.

I've had one just over 2 weeks, it's pretty good.

Maybe right. Can't remember where I found the independant review of it.
May well have been an american site, but the language they used didn't
strike me as having too many americanisms in.

There is a new phone, I think the 3630, that is due out any day now. It
looks like a 3650 with a normal keypad, but also has a 65,000 color screen,
and GSM 850/1900.
