Nokia 6310i as BT remote

Posted: 11-24-2003, 11:51 AM
Hi Group,

I was wondering if it is possible to use my Nokia 6310i as a remote for the
Media Player on my PC. I want to use the buttons on my phone for functions
like play/pause, volume control and seek. Is there some software out there?

Thanks,
Christian

Haven't been able to find any bluetooth apps for the 6310i myself. From what
I gather (I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong), there's no way for java
apps on the 6310i to access the bluetooth. Apparently the symbian phones can
do stuff, but not the 6310i. Don't know whether this could be a future
firmware fix though.

The T68i is able to function as a remote, even though it cannot run any
third party programs, because there are AT commands that can create very
basic menu interfaces on the phone and respond to key presses. This is how
the phones accessories like the camera and mp3 modules can add their own
interface to the phones built in menu system.

For this to be used as a remote control, the pc must initiate a bluetooth
serial connection to the phone, and build the menu interface on the fly.
Some surprisingly clever things have been done in this way, like making your
Winamp
playlist selectable on the phone, and using the phones joystick to move the
PCs mouse around.

I don't know if the 6310i has similar AT commands available but if it does
it may be possible to make it a remote control even without being able to
access
the bluetooth through a Java program.

I was tempted to wait for one of them to be honest instead of buying a T610.
The only thing that worried me is it's a charge the battery every day job
based on looking at the specs.

Seems to be about every 2 days at the moment.
That's with BT on all the time and a fair bit of GPRS use.
The battery in it is really tiny.
But yeah, its a bit hard to get used to after how long my t68i used to last.

I may be wrong, but it seems that Nokia has invested more in providing and
supporting tools for the developer than other companies, for example making
development tools and environments available under Linux which makes
discovering and using protocols and conventions alot easier when you have
the source code to applications which can communicate with the phone, e.g.
the Bluez protocol stack and associated tools. I am a bit of a Nokia freek
though so it may just be the menu paradigm shift thing with other phones.
