BT and Direct Speech Connection

Posted: 11-20-2003, 01:16 PM
Hi all!,

I just got back from lunch and I had an interesting discussion with a
colleague of mine. We were wondering why it is not possible or whether
indeed it could be possible to use two BT cell phones to communicate
directly to each other - walkie talkie style. I mean, everything is there, I
guess you would just need to hook the phones together and have a BT profile
that does what we want ... to exchange data on demand. There would probably
need to be some software on both ends that does the speech encoding/decoding
but that should be possible using Java (is there any API or other access
possible to the phone's BT modules?) or on the newer phones using symbian.

Just a thought ... does anyone know whether there even might be anything out
there that supports that use for BT in cell phones? Is anyone interested in
discussing the idea further?

Cheers,
Andy

PS: Would it not be even cooler to hook two BT headsets together ...... :-)

Naw it don't work that way. The BT-enabled mobiles generally only have
a profile called
"headset-audio-gateway". IE they can only be the master to a headset.
Likewise a headset has "headset" You would need something that had
both Audio gateway and headset for this to work

Now. when GSM manufacturers start putting CTP (Cordless telephony
Profile) and Intercom in their products we'll all be happier.

HI!,

now I am no Bt pro, but I thought these profiles are nothing but a piece of
software. And if that is so, then it should be possible to "upgrade" it
somehow (code your own stuff). I mean worst-case would have to be to
implement your own or to build on existing firmware.

Maybe I am too naive, I am not a programmer myself. Like I said ... just an
idea :-)

Sure you could, but you'd have to have an intimate knowlege of that
phone's firmware,
the BT stack it uses & how the whole design works. Say 2 years for a
programming staff of
10 developers who have an indepth knowlege of digital signal
processing, 2.4GHz radios,
real time programming on a custom built ASIC........
Let me know how you get on ;-)

Including CTP will also not achieve the scheme requested by the original
poster either.

True, true. But Then I could use one phone for GSM & Home use, and I,
for one, would be
happier!

Am I missing something? Bluetooth's real range is usually 8 metres, can't
you guys just speakup?

YES WE CAN! oh sorry. Actually, there are a few classes of Bluetooth
power, and my cordless phone is class 1, & that gives 100m. Class 0 is
up to 10m....

That's a bit optimistic, too. My Nokia 3650 and noname USB dongle BT
adapter start to hiccup beyond about 2 m. If I stand between the two
obscuring LoS, it's even less :-/
