LAN-problem

Posted: 11-19-2003, 09:32 PM
Hello all,

After a very good explantion from Maricio Freitas, I succeded in making a
LAN connection between my iPaq3870 and my desktop, using a bluetooth (Acer
BT500).
Unfortinately, I can't use any application that uses the internet :
explorer, msn messenger, ICQ... (I tried with or without proxy server
settings).
Starting ActiveSync only makes it possible to use the internet explorer on
my ipaq, but only when I'm using a proxy server.
MSN messenger still doesn't work.

Can the problem being caused by Norton Antivirus or by my router ?
My router is a USR-8000A.

Regards,
Zenith

The Bluetooth stack needs some ports to communicate with other components.
If you're using a personal firewall these communications can be blocked.

Make sure you don't have an active firewall - Zone Alarm is very bad for
this - even the built in if you're using Windows XP, then try again. You
might have to remove ZA. If it works, make sure that you install the
firewall again but creating appropriate rules to allow full communication
FROM localhost TO localhost.

Of course only applies if you are using the personal firewall

I'm using the internal firewall from my router.
I thought that I read an article that for certain applications (like msn
etc.) one has to open certain ports, because you can't disable the firewall
in my router (very strange !). It has to do something with "triggers" etc.
Don't ask me the exact terms because I don't know much about firewalls and
routers. (I just installed one because it was the easiest way to make a
network and get my pc's sharing the internet.) But I'm going to try
connecting one PC straight to the internet, just to see if it might solve
the problem.

Zenith

Don't worry - the firewall in your router shouldn't change things. The
problem is when you have a software firewall on a computer, blocking all
traffic by default. It should be set to notify of new programs and ask for
rule creation.

In your case the router firewall is ok...

My router's FW settings are command line driven only, having NAT & a s/w
FW for security, I never delved (I'm not running any servers). I don't
even know if router FWs block by default, have to be setup to be
effective or are model dependant. I presume a router FW only blocks
incoming or would be too cumbersome to set up for outgoing?

Not long after XP was launched, I tried ZA with it which I'd used
successfully under W98. It caused so many problems, I got rid of it &
used the free Kerio PFW instead to this day. I heard that any teething
problems between ZA & XP have long since been ironed out. When I 1st
installed both the BT stack & XTNDC, Kerio just asked me if I wished to
create rules. I leave the option to Ask me 1st on all the time as I did
with ZA. A s/w FW set to block everything without an existing rule is
inadvisiable unless you habitually change it every time you install
something, then back again as might be needed with a shared computer.
