Nokia 6310i and Dell Latitude CPx 500

Posted: 11-18-2003, 08:10 PM
Hello,

I have just got a Nokia 6310i cellular phone (software v5.51) and I have a
Dell Latitude CPx 500 laptop (PIII 500MHz running Windows 98se).
What item is the best way to use for connection between the laptop and the
phone, a PCMCIA Bluetooth device (like Nokia's DTL-4) or a USB device? And
is there any brand that I dont want to tuch in this type of device?

And which BT wireless headset is good advice to use in this combination?
Someone here on the group said the phone only can connect to one device at
the time, and the same with the headset. Can the DTL-4 PCMCIA card connect
to more than one device at the time? If I can use the BT headset as a
speaker/headphone for the PC and using the phone for connection to the
phonelines, will this enable me to dail a number from a program on the PC
and talk through the BT headset?

Is Windows 98 any drawback with bluetooth in any way, does BT work at all in
Win98?
Planning to upgrade to WinXP in the future...

Can't comment on bluetooth under win98, but a USB dongle is gonna be so much
cheaper than a PCMCIA card I'd go for one of them (but make it a TDK or
Belkin as they seem to get the best support). You're correct that the 6310i
will only connect to one thing at a time, so it'd be laptop *or* headset,
but not both at the same time. Headsets are generally the same.

Bluetooth USB dongles can generally support up to 8 simultaneous connections
(I'd assume the DTL-4 is the same but I don't know for sure, check the
manufaturers website), so that could do phone *and* headset, but to use the
laptop to dial the number and then speak through the headset would be a lot
of arsing around, and you'd probably have to pipe the audio through the
laptop to each device. Best option is to synchronise your contacts list from
outlook (or wherever) to the 6310i and use it with the headset directly.
