Solution for Bluetooth Headset with Landline Phones

Posted: 11-14-2003, 05:12 AM
Hello,
I am hooked on my bluetooth headset. I have a home office where my
cell reception is poor, so when there I use a regular landline
cordless phone. Does any company make a regular landline phone that
supports bluetooth headsets? I know there are companies looking to
replace the handset-basestation link with bluetooth, but what I want
is to use by bluetooth headset with a landline phone (corded or
cordless, doesn't matter).

On a related note, does any company sell a device that plugs into a
standard wired headset plug as a "bluetooth adapter" of sorts? For
example, you can purchase a Jabra headset for non-bluetooth phones and
it comes with something like this, but I can't tell if it is really
converting the headset jack to standard bluetooth or to some other
proprietary wireless connection.

I care more about the first question. If the answer is to plug the
answer to my second question into a standard cordless phone headset
jack, that works too I guess.

Finally, is it possible to pair my headset to multiple devices
simultaneously? I'm assuming the answer is no but I figured I would
ask. I expect Apple will support headset pairing by year's end, which
will let me use a bluetooth headset for iChat AV conversations.

Thanks in advance for any / all info. I am a newbie to bluetooth but
very impressed with the technology thus far.

I bought a Plantronics BT headset on sale at CompUSA a while ago ($59 USD if
I recall). It came with an adapter for non-BT cell phones. As it so happens
the adapter works with my land line phone. The biggest problem is that
adapter is a tad bulky and I haven't bothered to figure out a way to attach
it to the phone hand set. I suppose this would be a good application for
velcro...LOL

I may obviously be proved wrong but I can't see BT matching my Philips
Onis DECT cordless for either range, lack of interference or audio
quality. BT trying to re-invent the wheel? BT connectivity for address
book management etc makes more sense than using it for audio.

My DECT phone will work well at over 80m outside, inside where BT won't
& audio clarity has never been an issue, unlike my experience of BT
audio! DECT does use similar pairing called registration & one h/s can
be registered with more than one base. Bought the same system for work
once where its indoor range was 30m as advertised.

Nope. I've reported about the Bluephone project in August, and then again
this week:

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=1812

No, it's not the Bluephone. I can't say more because of a NDA, but it'll not
require a network based approach.
