Re: BT enabled without Win Logon Posted: 09-17-2003, 10:14 AM The Secure Connection will only encrypt the traffic. There's an option toforce a pass code to be entered in every connection attempt, but it can be disabled. Re: BT enabled without Win Logon Posted: 09-17-2003, 06:33 PM Thanks that's good info.I was wondering though, you still have to establish a pairing between the devices don't you? Are you saying that making the changes you mentioned in the other thread that I will NOT have to enter a passcode in order to pair the devices? Re: BT enabled without Win Logon Posted: 09-18-2003, 07:07 AM You're right you still have to pair the devices. With newer drivers evenwith paired devices you'd have to enter the pass code in every connection attempt. With this registry change you only have to pair the devices. I've seen this behavior with TDK 1.4 beta and was reported with DLINK 1.4. -- Mauricio Freitas Handhelds, mobile: http://www.geekzone.co.nz Bluetooth guides: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=449 "Tony Clark" <curiousgeorge1964@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:gV0ab.7216$BS5.2977@newsread4.news.pas.earthl ink.net... > Thanks that's good info. > > I was wondering though, you still have to establish a pairing between the > devices don't you? Re: BT enabled without Win Logon Posted: 09-18-2003, 08:23 AM It would be nice if you could configure the PC software for a pre-determinedpasscode. Sort of like my BT headset which is preset for a specific code. That way noone actually has to fire up the server GUI and if you wanted to make it more secure you could allow say 3 attempts to get the passcode correct then the SW could lock out that particular BT device. I now start the BTStackServer.exe via a Sheduled Task under my users account at the startup of the machine, which works fine e.g. to browse the net via a BT connection with my Palm (no additinal pairing nor auth needed). I even omit the start of the BTTray.exe, now, which normally gets started when I log on (saving some RAM .-- Cheers Oliver

Sorry, I actually drifted away to the OT thread. You're right, would be good to have a Service that could start with the machine. But your solution works fine. I don't mind the BTTray running (plenty of RAM here) because I have multiple devices - and the Sony Ericsson P800 synchronisation starts only from the desktop side. -- Mauricio Freitas Handhelds, mobile: http://www.geekzone.co.nz Bluetooth guides: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=449 >
Re: BT enabled without Win Logon Posted: 09-19-2003, 12:11 AM LOL...isn't that the way of the Internet? Ask a question get a completelyoff-topic answer?? I am curious to understand why you don't have to pair the Palm with the PC? Is it because you have already paired the Palm with the PC previously? If this is the case does the pairing survive a reboot? I am also interested to know why you started the task under your user account and not the administrator account? Is it a security issue or do you not have Admin priveledges on the PC? Thanks in advance for the info. When's pairing needed (was: BT enabled without Win Logon) Posted: 09-19-2003, 11:20 AM Tony Clark <curiousgeorge1964@hotmail.com> wrote:> LOL...isn't that the way of the Internet? Ask a question get a > completely off-topic answer?? not always BTW: I don't have to claim the workaround just for myself. Is it because you have already paired the Palm with the PC > previously? If this is the case does the pairing survive a reboot? Yes. With the Widcomm 1.3.2.7 driver I once paired my devices for the specific services (LAN access, Serial BT for Palm Hotsync,...) and since then I never had to do it again. (I think in some of the previous versions I had the trouble that I even explictly had to destroy a pairing on my palm to get it working again - and of course, you have to be logged on for that). > I am also interested to know why you started the task under your user > account and not the administrator account? Is it a security issue or > do you not have Admin priveledges on the PC? I have admin priv on my PC, but as I normally use it with my 'normal' account name (which also has priv level thou) I just tried it that way as everything was prepared already. I think (but didn't tried yet) that it also should work with the Admin account, but I guess you'd have to do the initial pairing info etc. first, as the pairing and other information (automatic start of services) are individual settings stored with the account?! -- Cheers Oliver
