Would this work... (ICS via Bluetooth)

Posted: 09-06-2003, 12:10 AM
Ok I was just thinking how I could get 2 (or possibly more!) computers
to ICS over a bluetooth network.

To keep things simple I will only talk about sharing the connection
with one other computer.

1. Install a USB Bluetooth Dongle on each system (£30 for a 100M
Belkin one in Argos so £60 total, not bad!)
2. On the system with internet access share your connection with the
bluetooth connection
3. Access the LAN using the LAN access service on the other system and
hey presto you are on the internet

or am I totally wrong??

If I am right this would be a good way for people to get online via
one connection very quickly and without any wires I see a nice
littke business oppertunity if this does work as I know lots of people
who want to share there connection but dont want cables and dont want
to pay loads for Wi-Fi equipment!

Yep it works alright. Just as you describe. The problem, however, is that
you are limited as to the number of devices that can access the BT dongle at
one time. I think most of these devices can only pair 2 or 3 devices at
most. Another issue is the performance of BT. It's going to be slower than
WiFi and if you are sharing the connection with more than one other PC I
suspect that things may slow down. Lastly, even though some of the dongles
like the Belkin are rated for 100m I think you will find that walls and
other obstructions will reduce that distance and will impact performance as
well.

Even so it should be a good fit for small home networks of say 2 or 3
computers all situated within a small area such as a home office.

Cheers
TC

BTW thanks for the pointer to Argos - that is the cheapest price I have
found so far in the UK and less than half of some online prices.
