Internet Access via T610...

Posted: 09-06-2003, 12:04 AM
Hi all,

I am very new to bluetooth so I thought i would share my experiences
with you all

I have a Sony Ericsson (SE) T610, Windows XP Pro SP-1 running on my
Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop and a Belkin USB Bluetooth Dongle (the 100M
one with the fin ariel thing).

I installed the SE software and created a dialup connection using my
O2 GSM WAP settings and it connected to the internet using my phone
(bluetooth modem)

After thinking Bluetooth was a bit crap to start with I now see what
it is designed for. I kept wanting to compare it to Wi-Fi, etc but I
cant, it is just a non-line of sight infrared and it is excellent

I am very happy with it now. I hope everyone else is as happy as me.
Yes Bluetooth is a bit weird to start with but just think of it as you
would connect a device via IR. The "services" it has for serial ports
make it just like a serial port, meaning you can use it so easily just
by mapping a dummy serial port to the bluetooth connection and the OS
makes everything think it is just a real serial port, genius

Bluetooth rules!

I had a very similar experience. Once I got everything working and I
understood the limitations I came to pretty much the same conclusions as you
did. The best way it was explained to me was that Bluetooth is simply a
replacement for wires. Even though some efforts have been made to make
Bluetooth do more I don't see it displacing WiFi at all.
