3com PCMCIA using Widcomm stack?

Posted: 08-27-2003, 09:38 AM
Is it possible to get the Widcomm stack to work with a 3COM 3CRWB6096B
PCMCIA Bluetooth card?

I've used
- Widcomm with a Tecom BT3030 USB
- BlueSoleil with a Mavin CF Card
- MS Stack with MS USB Transceiver
- 3com Bluetooth Connection Manager with 3com PCMCIA

Widcomm is by far the best in terms of easy of use and profile support.

MS seems stable and good at what it does, but it doesn't go far enough.

Bluesoleil is harder to use and less capable than widcomm.

I'm starting to really hate the 3com software. It doesn't support much, and
seems very unstable. I have to keep restarting the stack componant
"btprot.exe" It also prevents my PC from standing-by after I have used it to
dial up with my mobile phone.
Widcomm mostly seems to come with USB dongles but I have seen a couple of CF
adapters that use it, and doesn't the TDK PCMCIA one use it as well?

Would if just be a matter of playing with the *.inf files to get my 3com
onto widcomm?

I like the look of my 3com card with its pop out antenna, but the software
support is really poor.

I don't think that would help very much. I emailed Widcomm before and
they told me they only supported people who had licensed/bought BTW
Suite and SDKs directly from them.

Since I bought a Tecom BT3030 I have the right to run the Widcomm
stack on my machine, (the latest from Tecom is 1.2.2.16 so even
running 1.4.1 is probably not strictly legal) , but I wouldn't expect
to be officially supported if I wanted to get it to run on some
different hardware.

Having looked into it further it appears this is unfortuantely not
possible. 3Com seem to be using their own HCI layer transport protocol
called BT3C unlike the H4 and BCSP protocol used by cards with CSR
chipsets. I don't think Widcomm has written a driver that supports this
protocol, anyone with a 3Com card is expected to use the 3Com software.

Anyone have any hints on how I could get around this problem?

If the 3COM card does not conform to the Blueooth HCI specification
then it would not be possible.

If they do then you need to find out the Manufacturer ID and Product
ID for the card, you can usually do this with the Microsoft System
Information app. Then you would edit the bt*.inf file and add the
new id's in and then ask Windows to install a different driver for
your card.

Matt
